This Chocolate Nutella Cake Roll has a chocolate cake roll filled with creamy nutella and fresh strawberries. Topped with powdered sugar, this makes an elegant Valentine’s Day treat!
I have thing for cake rolls. They always catch my attention. I think that’s because they look so pretty and not only that, they are also super easy to make. I always say that I love desserts which look really pretty and fancy and yet are really simple to cake. Like chocolate lava cakes, that just tops my favorite dessert list for this very reason. Something so easy to make looks so fancy when you present it to your guests and that’s a winner recipe in my book. Cake rolls come in same category, minimal prep time, a really simple ingredient list yet they look like they came from some high end bakery!
I usually fill my cake rolls with frostings like buttercream or whipped cream or cream cheese but this time around I wanted to make something really simple which you can make and enjoy this Valentine’s Day and so I made this Chocolate Nutella Cake Roll. It’s a chocolate cake roll filled with nutella and chopped strawberries. Nothing fancy but really delicious!
Chocolate, nutella and strawberries are truly a match made in heaven, don’t you guys agree? An honest confession : nutella dipped strawberries is my favorite guilty indulgence. If you guys have not tried it, you don’t know what you are missing out on! Oh it’s so good, only calories and fat come in between me and my favorite nutella dipped strawberries!
Anyway coming back to the cake roll, it can’t be simpler to make. You only need very basic ingredients to make this cake – flour, eggs, cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla and oil. Yes we all have those ingredients at home. Like I said there’s nothing fancy in this dessert. To make this chocolate nutella cake roll I used a 15 x 10 inch jelly roll pan. You may use a full size baking sheet if you don’t have this. The prep time for this cake is hardly 10-15 minutes but the wait time is little longer. Once the cake is done, you have to immediately roll it using a kitchen towel and then let it cool completely before you unroll it and fill it with nutella. Always remember to use lots of powdered sugar when you turn the cake upside down on the kitchen towel. It will stick if you don’t use enough of powdered sugar.
You may well use whipped cream or cream cheese frosting in this chocolate nutella cake roll. But if you are a nutella lover like me, then you might just stick to “nutella only”! Enjoy!
Method
Start beating the egg whites using the wire whisk attachment of your stand mixer or use your hand mixer. Use cream of tartar when the egg whites begin to foam a little.
Beat the egg whites till they form peaks and appear glossy. Set aside.
In another bowl mix together egg yolks with sugar, oil and vanilla extract.
Beat the egg yolk and sugar mixture for 4-5 minutes on medium speed till it turns pale and creamy.
Add flour, cocoa powder and salt.
Mix to form a smooth batter, scrap down the sides as required.
Gently fold in the egg whites in 3 parts.
Mix till you have a smooth cake better.
Transfer batter to the prepared jelly roll pan. Bake at 350 F degrees for 15-18 minutes or until the cake springs back when touched.
While the cake is the oven, generously sprinkle powdered sugar over a kitchen towel. Once the cake is done, take it out of the oven and immediately flip in on the prepared kitchen towel. Peel the parchment paper and roll the cake and towel together. Let it cool completely.
Once the cake has completely cooled down, heat the nutella a little so that it’s easier to spread. Unroll the cake gently. Spread nutella all over the cake and then add chopped strawberries.
Roll the cake again carefully. Wrap in a plastic sheet and refrigerate for an hour before serving.
When ready to serve, dust it some powdered sugar and place fresh strawberries on top. Cut into slices and enjoy the chocolate nutella cake roll!
* You may use any filling of your choice for the cake. Strawberry jam, whipped cream are just few of the many options!
* Remember to chill the cake before slicing it.
