Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

As a food blogger, it’s always fun to come up with new recipes. I love to play with flavors and experiment in my kitchen and I could do it all day but sometimes we all need that classic recipe which we want to make as it is because they are classics for a reason and you don’t want to change them, just like this mint chocolate chip ice cream. Mint and chocolate is a very popular combination and you see it all over in US twice a year, once obviously during Christmas and second in March around St. Patrick’s Day. And since St. Patrick’s Day is almost here, I had to post some mint recipe for my readers.

I am not a huge mint fan but yes I’m always in if some chocolate is involved like in this mint chocolate chip ice cream. My problem with mint is that I like it only when it’s subtle in flavor. I do not like mint overpowering everything else in a dessert, well then it tastes like toothpaste and I hate that. And because of this the amount of peppermint extract that you add in the recipe becomes very important.

Mint Ice Cream With Chocolate Chip

This ice cream recipe is eggless just like my all other ice cream recipes. We do not associate ice creams with eggs in India and that has somehow stayed with me till now. I always think to try the custard base ice cream with eggs but when it comes to making the ice cream, I end up skipping the eggs. Anyway enough about eggs, this is about mint and chocolate. I think the amount of peppermint extract in this recipe is just perfect. It’s enough to give that nice mint flavor without making the ice cream taste like toothpaste, you get what I mean right? But having said that if you LOVE mint, add more of the extract.

I made this ice cream using my KitchenAid ice cream attachment. This was actually the first attachment that I thought of buying once I got my Kitchen Aid. Seriously making ice creams is so easy using ice cream makers. If you don’t have one, I would highly suggest to buy one especially because it will be summers soon and there will be so many exciting flavors to try! I can’t wait!

Method

In a bowl whisk together heavy cream and milk.

Add the granulated sugar and whisk till sugar dissolves completely.

Add peppermint extract, vanilla extract, salt, green food color (optional) and mix till combined. Cover the mixture and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.

Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Recipe-Step-1Once the mixture is chilled, make the ice cream according to ice cream maker manufacturer instructions.

Add semi-sweet chocolate chips to the ice cream mixture after the ice cream has been churning in the bowl for 10-15 minutes.

Once the ice cream is done, transfer to a bowl and freeze for 4-6 hours before serving or till the ice cream is firm.

Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Recipe-Step-2Scoop the refreshing mint chocolate chip ice cream into your favorite cone and enjoy before it melts!

* I have added a lot of chocolate chips here because I can never have enough of chocolate. 1/2 cup of chocolate chips should be good enough but I added extra 2 tablespoons. If you don’t share my love for chocolate, 1/2 cup should do.

*Adding green food color is optional. I added little because I have always seen mint ice creams like this – green in color!
