Aloo Tikki Burger

Indian style Aloo Tikki Burger – Spicy potato patties sandwiched between homemade burger buns with cilantro mint chutney and tomato chili ketchup!

Aloo Tikki Burger

When I was in school, McDonald’s opened it’s first ever outlet in my city. I remember I was so excited and couldn’t wait to try their burgers. Actually before that I had not even heard of McDonald’s. You see we always ate at home and while we were growing up, there was hardly any junk food around [except the Indian street food of course!]. But things started changing during my teenage years. These fast food chains started opening everywhere and very soon the city was packed with them. McDonald’s in India is very different from the McDonald’s that you have here in the US or for that matter any other country. The McDonald’s in India is packed with vegetarian options and that is obvious since India is primarily a vegetarian country.

Spicy Aloo Tikki Burger

So on the menu you have Aloo Tikki Burgerย (burger with spicy potato patties), Spicy Paneer Burger, McVeggie Burger, paneer wraps and lot of other things which I can’t even remember right now. In my 4 years of living in the US, I have never been to McDonald’s once simply because there’s nothing to eat for vegetarians! And the Indian McDonald’s is a heaven for vegetarians, like there are at least 3 different types of spicy vegetarian burgers on the menu to start with! I really miss eating them and even now when I go back home, I always go to the local McDonald’s to relish them.

Anyway so few days back I had this sudden urge to eat Aloo Tikki Burger and that’s how I made the burger buns which I shared last week. Seriously I have these cravings all of a sudden and then I just want that thing for my dinner. So since I didn’t have buns at home and couldn’t go the grocery then, I first made the burger buns and then made this aloo tikki burger.

To my aloo tikki patties, I also added some peas and carrots. This is optional but I recommend it. I also use some poha in my tikks which keeps them crispy. What also makes them crispy is panko bread crumbs! I highly recommend panko bread crumbs, they are perfect in this recipe. Also since this is Indian style burger, I used tomato chili ketchup and my favorite cilantro chutney on the buns. If you are fond of mayonnaise, you can definitely use that as a spread. And don’t forget little sprinkle of chat masala on top!

Method

Soak poha in 1-2 tablespoons of water for 5 minutes. Set aside.

Meanwhile add 2 teaspoons oil to a pan on medium heat. Once oil is hot, add chopped onions and cook for a minute.

Add chopped ginger, garlic and green chili and cook for another 1-2 minutes.

Add chopped carrots and cook for 1-2 minutes. It should remain crunchy.

Now add all the spices – chat masala, dried oregano, red chili powder, black salt, dried mango powder and garam masala powder. Also add the salt and cook for a minute.

Then add mashed potatoes, green peas, soaked poha and cornstarch to the pan.

Mix till everything is well combined and remove pan from heat. At this point check seasoning and adjust accordingly. You might want to add more salt on red chili powder depending on taste.

Now make 5 equal sized patties from that potato mixture. You can get more patties if you make smaller ones.

Meanwhile heat 2-3 tablespoons oil in a pan on medium heat. Take panko bread crumbs in a plate and take 1 of the patties and coat it with the crumbs from both the sides.

Once the oil is hot, add the bread crumb coated tikki to the pan. Repeat the same process with all the remaining tikkis.

Cook till each side of the tikki turns golden brown in color, around 2-3 minutes each side. Once all tikkis are cooked, remove from pan and place them on a kitchen towel.

To assemble the burger, cut burger buns into half. You can toast them lightly if you want. Apply tomato chili ketchup on half of the bun and cilantro mint chutney on the other half.

Place lettuce, sliced onion, tomato on one half of the bun.

Meanwhile place the tikki on the pan, once it gets little hot place cheese slice on top. Let it be like that for a like a minute or till cheese melts slightly.

Place theย tikki (with the slightly melted cheese) on top of the onion, tomato, lettuce. Sprinkle some chat masala.Aloo Tikki Burger Recipe-Step-5

Indian Aloo Tikki Burger

* You can use any cheese slice of your choice. In India, people usually use Amul cheese slices so you can use that too. I used pepper jack cheese.

* If you don’t have tomato chili ketchup simply mix regular ketchup with some sriracha and it would work just as well.

  1. You should have called this one the McAloo Tikki Burger…haha! I actually find it fun to go into McDonalds whenever we travel to other countries. The menu options are so different than what we have here in the States. This burger looks better than anything on any McDonald’s menu though…no matter the country! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. haha it’s not exactly like the McAloo Tikki Burger that’s why I didn’t ๐Ÿ˜› but yeah McDonalds is different everywhere but India is totally different because it has so much vegetarian options!
